Resolve to have a “Positive Attitude”

adults,African American females,African Americans,African descent, beautiful, beauty, businesses, businesswomen, cheerful, contemplation, day dreaming, females, happiness, intelligence,iStockphoto, people,Photographs, smiling, thinking, womenWell, we are now closing in on the end of the first month of the New Year. How are your New Year resolutions coming? Excercise program going well? Enrolled in a class you’ve always wanted to take? Or, are you spending more time with the family?

If you are waning on these or your specific “resolution”, why don’t you resolve to do something that will help you throughout your life and not just the beginning of a New Year. How about resolve that you will take on a positive attitude. Hmm…what could a positive attitude do for me? Well, I’m glad you asked!

A positive attitude can:

1. Give you power over situations that may seem defeating. Looking at a daunting situation with optimism allows you to move from being defeated to being a conqueror.

2. Give you the boost you need to go the extra mile in reaching any goal you set no matter what day of the year it is. It gives you the thought of “YES, I CAN!” When you have that feeling, you become unstoppable.

3. Alleviate stress. With a positive attitude, you approach life more calmly. Your feathers are not ruffled so easily. You look at the brighter side of things and tend to move freely through the situation. The benefit of having less stress is a longer and healthier life.

4. Makes you an all around happy person. Who wouldn’t want to be that person or be around a person like that? Positivism attracts good to you – good people, good opportunities, good everything for that matter. That happiness gives you the “umph” to keep on keeping on.

5. Lead to success. It’s like a battery that’s powered up and moving you to a successful life, career, relationships, family, and anything else you can think of or even set your hands to. Ahhh, the sweet smell of success…..

So when you think that this year is going to be just another year of failed resolutions, resolve to have a positive attitude. Change your thinking and begin to think positive. If you incorporate positive thinking into your daily life and make that your sole “resolution”, watch how all of your goals, wants, and wishes begin to be fulfilled. You can bet your bottom dollar on that!

Let’s Clean House

My husband preached a powerful sermon a couple of Sundays called “It’s Time To Clean The Temple” John 2:13-16. It got me to thinking on how we sometimes have to take time to clean house both physically and mentally. As we near the close of another year, plan some “me” time to clean house so that when the New Year rolls around you can begin it with a clean slate.

First clean house physically. Have any closets, desks, kitchens that can use a good cleaning out? Of course you do!! We all do. Take a day (or 2 or 3) to de-clutter and rid yourself of the chaos. Clutter slows down our progress and takes precious time away from things you could be enjoying. Having an organized space gives you a fresh perspective. It also greatly reduces stress. Some of you may have read my FB posts during the summer where I de-cluttered and organized spaces before school began. Boy am I glad I did! We were able to start the school year off right without the added stress of “mom, where is my…..”. So get going and plan your day(s) to physically “clean house”.

Finally, take some time to “clean house” mentally. Don’t dwell on what you did not accomplish this year.  Do away with all negative thoughts. Do away with self-doubt. Do away with the “I cant’s” and the wish “I could’ve” and the “I should’ve”. Replace them all with things that you actually did accomplish this year. Think positive thoughts. Boost your self-confidence. Fill your mind with a whole lot of “I can’s” and “I will’s”. A new year simply means another chance. 2012 is your year. Own it and go for it!

Create A 2011 “Ta-da!” List

Now what is a “Ta-da! “ list? My LinkedIn contact Tracy Ellis some time ago brought this concept to the world of “empowerment”. I grabbed hold of it fast because it was a concept that I never heard of but it made so much sense and inspired me to look at my accomplishments differently. We are always making lists of some kind – to do list, Christmas list, grocery list, etc., etc., etc. But why not create a list of things you have accomplished.  This list should nclude both big and small things as they both count.

Well my 2011 “Ta-da!” list goes like this:

1. De-cluttered and organized my spaces

2. Increased my speaking engagements by over 75%

3. Got a promotion doing something I love – teaching and training as a corporate instructor

4. Enhanced my blog

5. Stayed happily married another year (17 & counting)

Well, I have many more but I just wanted to give you an idea of what I mean.  Now, its your turn. Create your “ta-da” list. It will definitely make you feel better as you close out 2011. See, you are already smiling. Mission accomplished!

Own Your Own Development

In a world of stiff competition for the next best career move or next promotion, you must be ready to compete and compete hard. Instead of sitting on the sideline and watching others pass you by, take charge of your own destiny and own your own development. No one is going to do it for you. Why? Because they are busy trying to get theirs!

Let’s take a look at the example in the bible with the man by the pool who sat there for 38 long years waiting on someone to put him into the pool. Jesus asked him if he would like to get well but the man said “I can’t, sir for I have no one to put me into the pool when the water bubbles up. Someone else always gets there ahead of me.” whine…whine…whine… (can’t you just hear it). Then what did Jesus do? He commanded the man to stand up, pick up his mat, and walk! (John 5:7-8). Guess what? I, too like Jesus, am commanding you to stand up and stop sulking about your circumstances, pick yourself up, and walk into your destiny by owning your own development and getting where you want to be. Well, Ms. Queen of Excellence, how do I do that? Well, I’m glad you asked.

  1. Decide where it is you want to go and/or be in your next career move and why. A lot of times we don’t answer the question “why” but it is very important to answer it so you can find out if the next career move is really right for you. Think of what you are passionate about as I truly believe this will lead you to a fulfilling career. Take a clean piece of paper and write it down. I always say, writing it down makes it real.
  2. Do your research. Sometimes in doing your research you may uncover that this is either truly what you want to do or not. It may also lead you to other areas that you may not have even thought of. Google it, Bing it, and even better, find someone in that field that you can connect with, talk to, and get the real deal from someone who is already doing it.
  3. Create a learning development plan with the results of your research. Write out practical steps that will help you learn all that you can about the specific career, job, business, or whatever it is. Think of skills you may need to develop and create a plan to obtain the necessary skills needed to be successful.
  4. Be intentional on developing yourself. Don’t just gather the information from your research, make a plan, ant then sit on it. Do something with it. Do a little something everyday to develop the desired skills you need to be successful and competitive in whatever it is you have chosen to do.
  5. Own it. Yes, it is yours. By human nature, we take care of things that we own so be very mindful of taking care of your own development. No one can do it for you. You have to want to do it and continue to want to do it. Leaning should always be  continual. When you stop learning, you stop growing as a person.

Another point, I want to leave you with. While, I highly recommend you take full advantage of development classes and training offered by the company you currently work for, I strongly suggest you seek development outside of your companies culture. Find leadership conferences to attend. Sign up for seminars, workshops, and webinars and personal develppment. Take a community college course. Or better yet, hire a personal coach like me! This small investment into yourself can open up doors to greater opportunities that will in turn bring you great dividends. Don’t overlook the power of coaching as it is a growing field and serious individuals who have had them before, swear by this form of personal development.

Take another look at this article on the importance of having a personal coach and give me a call. 2012 is almost here and, together, we can get your game plan ready to tackle it with a vengeance! http://www.npr.org/template/text/s.php?sId=140849085&m=1.

Do you have a “Personal Board of Directors”?

As you navigate through life, in business, marriage, or whatever your current plight is, you need to have your very own Personal Board of Directors. Why? Because they will support you, cheer you on, give you sound advice from the heart, and will always have your best interest at heart.

So, how do you choose your Personal Board of Directors? Well, I’m glad you asked.

First, make sure they are Godly people. A person who follows the counsel of God will seek Him when giving you advice, direction, or counsel. The Bible says that “The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense.” Proverbs 27:9. That sweetness comes from knowing the word of God.

Second, choose people that are from diverse backgrounds, experiences, opinions, and race. That way you have a better chance of getting different viewpoints which will garner you a richer pool to draw from when making decisions about important issues. Also, try mixing it with men and women.

Third, choose people that are just plain real. People who are real are not afraid to be who they truly are. They are the same person at all times even during your highs and your lows. These are the type of friends will be able to see right through and know when you are not being real. These friends are also not afraid to tell you like it is, even if it hurts. The bible says in Proverbs 27:5-6 “An open rebuke is better than hidden love! Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy.” I’d much rather have my friend to speak the truth to me in love, even if it hurts.

Now, your don’t have to have a large board. However, it should be of such quality that when you take a risk, you know they will have your back no matter what the outcome. Having a Personal Board of Directors is essential as we attempt to navigate this thing called life. Therefore, don’t be afraid to reach out and get help along the way. Having a Personal Board of Directors along with having best friends are not to be confused with being one in the same. However, it’s no harm in having them overlap with the understanding that there is a fundamental difference. The board helps navigate your life and the best friend helps you make it through life.

So, what do you think? Do you think having a Personal Board of Directors is a good idea? If so, take some time think of persons in your life that might qualify to be a part of your Personal Board of Directors. Once you do this and begin utilizing them to the fullest, watch how your life begin to sore to another level – the level of excellence.

The Importance Of Being Still

As entrepreneurs we are so busy that we miss out on the clarity that comes from just being still. We have to take time to just sit and visit with our own thoughts – with no noise and no distractions. It has to be a “must do” on our “to do” list. Just like we “must” take time to renew ourselves spiritually. We also “must” renew ourselves professionally. Even if we have to schedule time to do it and do it in small increments of time, it will be well worth it. You will feel better about why you do what you do and more importantly why you love what you do.

So, my fellow entrepreneurs, take some time to just be still. If you do this, watch how creativity, new ideas, new strategies, and much more will come flowing out of your stillness. You will be glad you did.

Until next time, the Queen of Excellence has spoken.
